Where Was Knives Out Filmed
The filming of Knives Out took place in and around Boston, Massachusetts. The film's primary setting is the mansion of the author Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer). The house feels like a ‘Cluedo' board game brought to life.
Surprisingly, the movie uses three real mansions to represent the film's iconic crime scene. The exterior of the house was a gothic revival mansion built in 1890 and situated just outside of Boston.
The location is a private home that is not accessible to the general public. The unexpected popularity of the film has generated lots of interest in the property that is extremely inconvenient for the owners. So please don't go looking for the house.
The majority of the film is set in Ames Mansion, a 1920s house located south of Boston in Borderland State Park. This home, which has been in the same family for more than 100 years.
According to producer David Crank, they only utilized the first floor of the house and parts of the exterior. The crew constructed the second and third floors on a soundstage.
The Ames Mansion, which was featured in Martin Scorsese's 2010 thriller “Shutter Island,” was utilized to shoot the tense confrontations Harlan would have with his dysfunctional family.
