The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is one of the most highly anticipated shows coming to Netflix this year. It is a Jim Henson creation and a prequel to the 1982 movie, The Dark Crystal. There are 10 episodes planned for release on August 30th 2019 and the story will explore the world of Thra created for the original film.
Very little has been given away about the plotlines. But what we do know is that the show will follow three Gelflings – Rian, Brea and Deet. They come from three of the seven Gelfling clans. Brea, from the noble Vapra in the capital city, Rian from the Stonewood clan, and Deet of the cave-dwelling Grottans.
The world of Thra is dying and The Crystal of Truth is at the heart of Thra, a source of untold power. But it is damaged, corrupted by the evil Skeksis, and a sickness spreads across the land. The three Gelfling uncover the horrific truth behind the power of the Skeksis. As a result, they inspire a rebellion against the Skeksis and their power that threatens their world of Thra.
This is an enormous production with the director, Louis Leterrier, insisting on the use of puppets rather than CGI. Considering the original film cost $15m way back in 1982, the costs of the Netflix show must be stratospheric. And that includes the fees for the enormous and star-studded cast that have come on board.
The three main Gelflings will be voiced by Taron Egerton as Rian, Anya Taylor-Joy as Brea and Nathalie Emmanuel as Deet. But it's the recurring roles that have really brought the big names in. Eddie Izzard, Toby Jones, Lena Headley (GoT), Alicia Vikander, Natalie Dormer and Helena Bonham Carter will all star as Geflings.
They will join the newly announced Sigourney Weaver and Caitriona Balfe (Outlander) along with Mark Hamill, Simon Pegg, and Andy Samberg.
Basically, this cast is phenomenal. If they can all bring their A game then The Dark Crystal: Age Of Resistance is going to be one of the best shows ever made. Especially if the images and teaser trailer that have already been released are anything to go by.
