Knives Out 3 Release Date – When Is It Coming To Netflix?

Where to watch Knives Out 2

Writer and director Rian Johnson is a man on a roll. Not only has he created one of the biggest shows this year with Poker Face, he is also the creative brains behind the two hugely successful Knives Out movies.

Knives Out first hit the big screen in 2019 and, by any metric, was a box office runaway, earning over $300 million on a modest budget of just $40 million.

With it's stellar cast and creative central mystery, it didn't take long for Netflix to spot an opportunity and in March 2021 the streaming titan purchased the rights to two Knives Out follow-ups for an incredible $450m.

So far, we've been treated to one of those two movies. With Daniel Craig reprising his role, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, was released in 2022.

With one down and one to go, the big question now is; Knives Out 3 – when is it coming to Netflix?

Knives Out 3 Release Date

Despite knowing that we will absolutely get a third instalment in the series, there is very little known about Knives Out 3.

We can confirm that Rian Johnson is writing and directing the film and that Daniel Craig will be back as Detective Benoit Blanc.

Other than that, all we know is that it is still at the script stage. To be fair, Johnson does create very intricate plots that can't just be manufactured out of thin air and a two year gap between movies is reasonable.

It is scheduled for release in 2024 and given the release date of the last film, and the fact that it hasn't yet been cast or started filming, we will probably be looking at the tail end of 2024.

We're hedging our bets, that given how successful the last movie was, that we should see Knives Out 3 around December 2024.

The original Knives Out was released in 2019 to critical acclaim and became an instant hit with audiences around the world.

The plot begins when renowned crime novelist Harlan Thrombey (played by Christopher Plummer) is found dead at his estate just after his 85th birthday.

Inquisitive and debonair Detective Benoit Blanc (played by Daniel Craig) is mysteriously enlisted to investigate. From Harlan's dysfunctional family to his devoted staff, Blanc sifts through a web of red herrings and self-serving lies to uncover the truth behind Harlan's untimely death.

The film is a modern take on the whodunit genre, paying homage to the works of Agatha Christie.

It features an ensemble cast including Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson, Toni Collette, Lakeith Stanfield (Haunted Mansion), Katherine Langford, and Jaeden Martell, among others.

You can watch it on Netflix in Australia and American fans can catch it on DirecTV. However, for most fans around the world, you will need to rent it on Amazon.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery Recap

In May 2020, tech billionaire Miles Bron of Alpha Corp. organises a murder mystery event at his lavish Glass Onion mansion on a secluded Greek island.

He sends out unique puzzle box invitations to five acquaintances: Lionel Toussaint, Alpha's chief scientist; Claire Debella, the governor of Connecticut; Birdie Jay, a provocative fashion icon; Duke Cody, a men's rights advocate; and Andi Brand, the ousted co-founder of Alpha.

They all head to the island, accompanied by Birdie's aide Peg and Duke's partner Whiskey. Unexpectedly, renowned detective Benoit Blanc also arrives. Though uninvited, Miles lets him stay, thinking it's a prank by a guest.

Tragically, Duke dies after sipping from Miles's drink. With the police delayed until dawn and Duke's gun missing, it's up to Benoit Blanc to solve the mystery and solve the murder.

With an all-star cast the includes Daniel Craig, Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Kate Hudson, Dave Bautista, Jessica Henwick and Madelyn Cline.

As expected, it was another massive hit for Netflix with over 209 million hours watched in the first ten days of its release.

Knives Out 3 Movie Title

It's common knowledge that Rian Johnson didn't want the ‘Knives Out‘ title attached to his second movie.

Hoping to create a stand alone film, he was reluctantly on board with the name, knowing that fans of his first film would connect the dots more easily with the attachment.

However, speaking to The Filmcast podcast, Johnson said he is hoping to eventually drop the Knives Out association.

He said: “I want to see how quickly we can lose that subtitle. As soon as we can get past those and get to ‘A Benoit Blanc Mystery’…and I will say, with this one, with the reach of Netflix and just how many more people I feel like have seen it and how much more it feels like it’s actually in the culture, we’re at least getting closer to being able to get away with ‘A Benoit Blanc Mystery’ and people would know what we’re talking about.”

So will we get ‘A Benoit Blanc Mystery‘ or will get another ‘Knives Out‘ mystery for the third film? Only time will tell!
