Never Have I Ever was a huge hit for Netflix when it was released in April 2020 with Netflix reporting that it was viewed by 40 million households globally.
A coming of age teen drama, it follows Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan), a typical first-generation Indian American teenager.
She is trying to find her place in the world and balance her traditional Indian culture with her modern American lifestyle.
A relatable and fun character for many young people who are trying to find their way in life, it was so successful that Netflix quickly renewed it for a second season.
We had to wait until July 2021 to get the next instalment of Devi's life but it was worth the wait.
Especially as the show is mostly narrated by professional tennis player John McEnroe for Devi, with one of the episodes narrated by Andy Samberg for Ben and another by Gigi Hadid for Paxton. Fun twist that only adds to the delight of the show!
If you haven't already watched the first two seasons, here's a quick summary of what happened…
Never Have I Ever Season 1 Recap
Created by Mindy Kaling, Never Have I Ever is about a 15-year-old Indian-American girl from Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles. After her father, Mohan (Sendhil Ramamurthy) dies suddenly, Devi loses the sensation in her legs due to the psychological trauma of his death.
Finding herself unable to walk for three months, one day she miraculously recovers and stands on her legs in an attempt to see her crush Paxton Hall-Yoshida (Darren Barnet, Love Hard).
And so begins Devi's attempts to change her social status, and lose her virginity but friends, family, and feelings do not make it easy for her.
Over the course of season 1 Devi's life changes a lot when she discovers that she likes not just Paxton but also Ben (Jaren Lewison), despite the difficult start to their friendship.
However, Devi does not make things easy for herself and while trying to decide which boy she likes more, she almost loses the chance to be with either of them.
We left season 1 with Devi kissing Ben while Paxton leaves her a message while waiting at her front door.
Never Have I Ever Season 2 Recap
Picking up where the first season ended, Devi is faced with a choice between Paxton or Ben. But in true Devi style, she ends up dating both of them at the same time.
And the whole back and forth thing continues for much of the season with Paxton even getting hit by a car because of her.
When a new Indian girl, Aneesa, starts at the school, it really throws Devi who then becomes convinced that she will hook up with Ben. So what does Devi do? She starts an awful rumour that gets two other girls suspended and nearly ends up with Aneesa transferring.
Throw in an angry Paxton, who is failing school, her mother moving on after her father's death, issues with her friends and a whole load of other subplots and you end up with Devi and Paxton breaking up, then making up with a few emotional breakdowns in between.
Never Have I Ever Season 3 Release Date
Thankfully the drama of Devi's life doesn't end there. Netflix confirmed the show for a third season on August 19, 2021.
Even better news is that filming for Never Have I Ever season 3 began in November 2021 and was fully wrapped on March 1, 2022.
So when will season 3 of Never Have I Ever be released by Netflix? The wait is over and the show returns for Season 3 on August 12th 2022.
Never Have I Ever Season 4
Netflix are so confident that season 3 will a hit, that they have actually renewed and confirmed Season 4!
On a slightly sadder note, it will be the final season and we have to wait for it to premiere in 2023.
The show's creator Mindy Kaling had this to say:
“Hey Crickets, we’ve got some morning announcements for you: Season 3 of Never Have I Ever is gonna drop this summer!
“Plus we’ve just been renewed for a fourth and final season, which we are absolutely thrilled about.
“We can’t wait to reveal all the steamy romance and hilarious adventures we have in store for you.
“Thanks to all our fans for your support – especially you #Bevi and #Daxton stans. We love you!”
Never Have I Ever Cast
Never Have I Ever is a big production. With the school setting, plus the additional family members, it takes a huge cast to bring it all together.
Famously Maitreyi Ramakrishnan was cast after Mindy Kaling put out an open casting call and received over 15,000 responses.
The then 17-year-old Canadian had never acted professionally before but we can't think of anybody else who would be more perfect as Devi than Maitreyi!
Maitreyi Ramakrishnan as Devi Vishwakumar, a 15-year-old sophomore who wants to improve her life, based on the show's creator, Mindy Kaling.
Poorna Jagannathan as Dr. Nalini Vishwakumar, a dermatologist and Devi's mother
Darren Barnet as Paxton Hall-Yoshida, a 16-year-old high school junior and Devi's crush
Jaren Lewison as Benjamin “Ben” Gross, also a high school sophomore. Relationship status: It's complicated!
Richa Moorjani as Kamala Nandiwadal, Devi's cousin. Completing her PhD at Caltech
Ramona Young as Eleanor Wong, one of Devi's best friends who has a passion for acting.
Lee Rodriguez as Fabiola Torres, one of Devi's best friends, who is struggling with her sexuality.
Niecy Nash as Dr. Jamie Ryan, Devi's therapist
Sendhil Ramamurthy as Mohan Vishwakumar, Devi's deceased father
John McEnroe as himself, the narrator of the series and Mohan's idol
Never Have I Ever Season 3 – What Happens?
What we know so far is that Devi doesn't sail off into the sunset with Paxton – sorry #Daxton fans. The show will dig deeper into Devi and Paxton's blossoming teen romance but it won't all be plain sailing.
Co-creator Lang Fisher revealed in an interview with ET that the next season would discuss “sex and what do you do if you're a nerd who's done very little and you're dating a much more experienced guy.”
So Devi and Paxton's new relationship will unfold but the path to true love is never smooth and there is more drama to come.
Darren Barnet gave us the biggest hint when he said: “There's a lot more for Devi to learn about Paxton, for Paxton to learn about himself, and for Devi to learn about herself.
“And when that all comes to fruition, who knows? They may fall in love or realize they're better as friends or absolutely hate each other, so you never really know.”
We also know that the relationship between Devi and her mum will be another focus of season 3. As they grow and change they will have to learn to lean on each other more.
