What Is Castle About?
Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) is a successful writer specialising in crime thrillers. Bored and suffering from writer's block, he kills Derrick Storm, the main character in his successful book series.
When a killer begins copying the killings described in one of his novels, the police call him to give a statement, as he is the prime suspect.
After being released, Castle begins to help the police in solving this crime. With this, he meets Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic), a tough and intelligent woman, and becomes intrigued by her.
When the crime is finally solved, Castle manages to persuade them to let him be a collaborator on future NYPD cases, through his friendship with the mayor of New York City, with the excuse of doing research for his new book.
He is inspired to take Beckett as his muse for Nikki Heat, the main character in his upcoming book series, and asks for his collaboration to follow Beckett.
Castle's exuberant personality clashes with Beckett's more reserved and professional demeanour, however, as Beckett begins to appreciate Castle's help in helping her catch killers, the two eventually become friends and develop feelings for each other.
The show also focuses on the stories of supporting characters such as Detective Javier Esposito, Detective Kevin Ryan, Coroner Lanie Parish, Captain Roy Montgomery and Captain Victoria Gates across several episodes.
Why Was Castle Cancelled?
Castle had a total of eight seasons and 173 episodes. With many fans worldwide, it received many positive reviews and won several awards, including Best Drama Series.
The show was initially scheduled to continue with a ninth season when it was unexpectedly canceled.
Although Richard Castle was scheduled to return, Kate Beckett's character was to leave the series. With the other actors slated for only one year, fans of the sitcom realised that the story that captivated so many people was coming to a natural end.
Given that the plot revolved around the relationship between Castle and Beckett, added to the rumours of friction on the set between Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic in contrast to the conduct of their characters, the show's public wasn't happy, and Castle reached the lowest number of viewers since its premiere in 2009. Thus, ABC announced, a few days before the final episode's exhibition, the production's official cancellation.
The last episode of season eight, which turned out to be the story's final chapter, ended with a flash-forward that showed Castle and Beckett as parents of three children.
For many viewers, the end of the series was seen without surprise since it would make no sense to continue the story without one of the main characters.
Did Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic Get Along With Each Other?
The relationship between Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic, who played the lead characters Richard Castle and Kate Beckett has been the subject of much speculation and rumor over the years.
While the two actors had great on-screen chemistry, there have been reports of tension and conflict between them off-screen, particularly in the later seasons of the show.
In 2016, it was announced that Stana Katic would be leaving the show after season 8, and there were reports that her departure was due to conflicts with Nathan Fillion.
However, both actors have since stated that they have nothing but respect and admiration for each other and that any rumors of animosity were unfounded.
In a statement at the time of Katic's departure, Fillion said, “Stana has been my partner all this time, and I thank her for creating the character of Beckett who will live on for all of us as one of the greatest police officers on television.”
Similarly, Katic has spoken positively about her time on the show and her relationship with Fillion, saying in a 2019 interview that they “had a wonderful time working together.”
