Is Heartstopper Suitable For Kids?

Heartstopper is a series for teenagers, and covers all the issues surrounding teen life. It has romance, friendship, sexuality, self-doubt, bullies and friends that always have your back, and all the drama and distress that comes with being an adolescent. As a romantic relationship is central to the plot, you can expect flirting, dating and kissing.

There is plenty of emphasis on liking others, who has a crush on whom, who is texting whom and all those little school-age issues.

However, the sexual content is light and mostly confined to kissing and hand-holding. Bullying is portrayed several times, and the language is mild, with some vulgar British slang.

Teenagers drink at a party, but no one acts drunk. The characters support each other and, for the most part, are kind. Friends and family hug each other and are honest with their feelings, and the themes of integrity and empathy are strong.

Common Sense Media rates this series as suitable for those aged 13 and above. Officially Netflix has rated the show as suitable for 12 and above.
