How Realistic Is Homeland?
Although Homeland is a fictional series, the television drama presents accurately the mission, the intensity, the contradictions and the complexity of a CIA station involved in a deadly battle against terrorism.
There is also an uncomfortable and uncompromising truth about the moral and practical dilemmas in what now seems like an inflexible future and where we will face other ruthless enemies.
Clearly, there are times when the actual practice of the CIA would be different from that pictured in Homeland.
After all, it meant to be a secret intelligence business whose techniques and methods are unknown to opponents or friends.
What is important is how successful Homeland is in capturing the viewers attention, reeling them in and keeping them hooked.
Where Is Homeland Filmed?
Homeland has always moved with different settings and has been filmed in a variety of places during its time on the small screen.
The show was initially set in the United States, namely in Charlotte, North Carolina, but bounced around as the drama continued.
Several filming locations include, for example, Morocco, with the North African nation folding into Afghanistan. The set marks a return to the country from season four, filmed in Cape Town, South Africa.
It was also shot in several cities such as Berlin, Budapest, Los Angeles, Lake Norman, and Old San Juan, among others.
How Do People in Pakistan Feel About Homeland?
Although Homeland has been a global success, the series is surrounded by some controversy and discomfort within Pakistan.
Diplomats have approached the producers directly about the Emmy-winning drama without great success.
One complaint is that the show has destroyed the image of the capital. They say Islamabad is a calm and picturesque city with beautiful mountains.
Still, it was pictured as a war zone with shotguns and bombs exploding, including the lack of greenery representing the country's capital.
The “Islamabad” scenes were actually filmed in Cape Town, South Africa.
Pakistani diplomats have also called out the show's producers for misrepresenting its language, explaining that the Pakistani characters in the show speak English as Americans would. Also, when they talk Urdu, the accent is far from the local one.
The major criticism is that the show describes Pakistan as undemocratic and allied with terrorism. For them, this representation is outrageous and an insult to the sacrifices of the thousands of Pakistani military in the war against terrorism.
