Shows Like Only Murders In The Building – 10 Great Mysteries To Watch

Only Murders in the Building is an American television series that first aired on Disney+ in 2021 and quickly gained public attention.

Created by Steve Martin and John Hoffman, this crime comedy gathers famous main actors such as Martin himself, Martin Short and Selena Gomez.

The series tells the story of three strangers who share an obsession with true crime and suddenly find themselves involved in a real-life case.

When a horrific death occurs inside their exclusive apartment building on the Upper West Side, the three neighbours begin to suspect murder.

Using their knowledge to investigate the case, they start a podcast about the death, which the police have determined to be a suicide.

But it doesn't take long for the trio to realise that a killer may be living among them and that nothing is what it seems, even between themselves.

They now have to rush to figure out the clues and uncover the truth before it's too late.

Will Only Murders in the Building Get A Third Season?

Yes. In July 2022, it was announced that Only Murders in the Building would return for a third season.

The series has been rated as creative excellence, acclaimed by critics and with high recognition directed at its comedic approach to crime fiction and the acting and chemistry between the leading performers.

In addition, it was nominated for the Critics Choice Awards and Golden Globes for Best Comedy Series, as well as the Writers Guild of America Awards (WGA), which distinguish the best screenwriting for television, movies, radio and video games.

Disney+ has confirmed that the premiere date for season 3 is August 8th, 2023.

Is Only Murders in the Building Based On A True Story?

Not really. The hilarious chemistry between Steve Martin and Martin Short, Selena Gomez's quirky comments, and the beautiful Upper West Side setting make the perfect murder comedy show.

Yet, since the characters are so interested in true crime stories, and we all have quirky neighbours, it could indeed have a grain of truth.

However, any resemblance to reality is pure coincidence, as the series is actually created and written by Martin and Hoffman.

While the series is surprisingly emotional, modern and self-referential about podcasts and murders, it is entirely fictional.

The murders in the building alone may not be based on a true story, but since it came from the minds of geniuses like Martin, we may be in for a surprise at the reality it represents.

Is The Arcona An Actual Building?

Much of Only Murders in the Building is set inside a building, where the three strangers are, in fact, neighbours.

Naturally, a great series should have a distinct scenario, which in this case is the Arcona building.

The OMITB building exists in real life, but it's a 13 storey luxury condominium in the heart of Manhattan's Upper West Side called The Belnord.

And yes, it is as magnificent as it looks on the show, with that stunning palatial limestone structure boasting golden wrought iron gates at the entrance, six lobbies, and a private residential lift to access the flats.

Although the building exists, the show's sets are fictional, as the filming took place in various locations around New York.

Does Steve Martin Play The Concertina?

Steve Martin does indeed play the concertina in several scenes. As well as an excellent actor and producer, he is a very talented musician.

Before his character Charles met his love interest, Jan, he was seen playing the concertina, hoping to add some background music to his podcast, Only Murders in the Building.

Once he met Jan, he discovered that she was a basoonist, and the two would play their respective instruments from their flat windows, creating sweet harmony.

It turned out that Steve Martin didn't need to learn to play the concertina for the show because he already knew how to play, and in every scene, it is, in fact, him actually playing.
