Shows Like ‘Ted Lasso’ – 10 Feel Good Series To Stream Now

Ted Lasso, on Apple TV+, is a unique show that will keep you entertained from start to finish. The series follows an American Football coach who is hired by a Premier League soccer team called AFC Richmond.

The owner of AFC Richmond is Rebecca Welton (Hannah Waddingham), a recent divorcee who inherited the club as part of her settlement.

Knowing how much her ex-husband loves the team, she decides to drive it into the ground by hiring a man, Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis), who has absolutely no idea what soccer is.

However, what Ted lacks in soccer knowledge, he more than makes up for by being one of the nicest people on the planet.

But will it be enough to keep AFC Richmond in the Premier League or will his lack of experience be the final nail in the club's coffin?

Critically acclaimed and award-winning, Ted Lasso is a truly special show that reaches out from the tv to give you a great big virtual hug.

What Is Ted Lasso About?

Ted Lasso is a comedy-drama starring Jason Sudeikis, an American football coach tasked with leading an English soccer team to victory. Despite his inexperience, Lasso aims at winning over his new club with his optimistic, can-do attitude.

Ted is hired by Rebecca Welton (Hannah Waddington), the club owner, who is determined to see the team lose to spite her ex-husband. However, Lasso's humour, personality, and charm begin to win over the team and Rebecca.

Where Is Ted Lasso Filmed?

Several scenes are filmed in Richmond, Greater London, as Ted's fictional employers are AFC Richmond. This includes locations such as Prince's Head Pub and Richmond Green.

However, most of the show is filmed at Hillingdon, London, at West London Film Studios. Most indoor scenes, such as office room sequences and various conferences, are filmed in the studio.

Real sports venues were used to make the football scenes look real. For instance, AFC Richmond plays matches at Selhurst Park Stadium in Croydon. Other filming locations include the Twickenham Rowing Club and Church Street in Twickenham.

Why Is Ted Lasso So Popular?

The show focuses on sports but doesn't make it the main focal point of the storyline, which makes Ted Lasso accessible to all types of viewers. It also contains a balance of comedy and drama, making it very watchable.

Creating a story balance out of a long comedy season can be pretty challenging, but Ted Lasso scriptwriters do it perfectly.

The show is hilarious; Ted's fish-out-of-water experience as he adjusts to life in the UK and coaches an entirely different sport gives plenty of opportunity for comedic moments.

On the other hand, the drama surrounding Rebecca's plan to bring down her ex-husband adds an edge that keeps you entertained.

Jason Sudeikis

Sudeikis plays Ted Lasso perfectly, which is not surprising as the actor invented the character! ‘Ted' was created as a cartoonish American fool in a series of NBC Sports commercials to promote the Premier League back in 2013.

It was a five-minute comedy sketch with the title ‘An American Coach in London‘ intended as a showpiece for the quirks of English sport with Ted as the foil for the jokes.

Despite having no understanding of the game's rules or context, Lasso is hired to coach ‘The Spurs' (Tottenham Hotspur). The humour comes from the fusion of unwavering self-confidence, incompetence, and inevitable failure.

The commercials for NBC Sports outlined the basic concept behind Ted Lasso, which later evolved into the Apple TV+ series.

Where Have You Seen Jason Sudeikis Before?

Ted Lasso is not the first time Jason has taken on a comedic role. He starred in Horrible Bosses, and We're The Millers.

However, he has also appeared in some strange series and films. In 2019, Sudeikis played a Biker Scout Trooper in the Star Wars series ‘The Mandalorian‘, and the actor's voice has been featured in the animated series' Scooby-Doo and SpongeBob SquarePants.

His most significant success came voicing the character ‘Red' for the popular kid's movie Angry Birds. The film grossed $352 million worldwide and became the fourth highest-grossing film of all time to be based on a video game.
