Shows Like Yellowstone – 9 Amazing Western Style Dramas

Looking for shows like Yellowstone, the western drama series created by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson? Look no further!

The show stars renowned actors Kevin Costner, Wes Bentley and Kelly Reilly and follows the conflicts of a large cattle ranch with an indigenous reserve and land developers with whom it borders.

What Is Yellowstone About?

The series follows the struggle of the Dutton family, led by John Dutton, who controls the largest contiguous ranch in the state of Montana in the United States.

Refusing to give up any part of the land they have inherited, the family is under constant attack from those it borders, land developers, an Indian reservation and the first National Park in the United States of America.

On one side, large real estate companies want the property to develop local commerce and expand urban space. On the other, indigenous communities protest against the illegal takeover of land belonging to Native Americans.

Yellowstone is an intense look into a violent world far from media scrutiny, where land takeovers earn billions from developers, and politicians are bought and sold by the world's largest oil and lumber companies.

Unsolved murders are frequent and a consequence of living on a new frontier. This series is a view into the best and worst of America, seen through the eyes of a family that represents both.

What Is The Appropriate Age To See Yellowstone?

Yellowstone is a contemporary western series about corruption, crime and violence.

As such, there are many weapons, animals and people are shot dead, with bloody wounds occasionally seen, and men are marked with a hot iron.

Representations of sexuality include simulated sexual acts and partial nudity. Like the classic westerns that influence it, this series also has a lot of cursing, drinking and smoking, and plenty of corrupt behaviour.

While it is each parent's responsibility what kind of content they allow their children to view, we recommend Yellowstone for ages 18+.

Is Yellowstone Based On Actual Events?

Yellowstone is a worldwide success with critical acclaim. The series became well-known for its characters, who don't necessarily fall into the categories of good or bad, but essentially for their authentic portrayal of cowboy culture.

The show is so realistic that some fans even question whether it is based on actual events and real people.

However, Yellowstone is entirely fictional, a product of the imagination of writers John Linson and Taylor Sheridan. The co-creators were inspired by today's cowboys' struggles and the issues ranchers faced throughout history.

Although not a true story, the series portrays many real-world issues, such as oppression, injustice, racism and especially corruption. Sheridan has also used his experience of growing up on a ranch in Texas and working as a cowboy.

The set also featured real-life cowboys and ranch hands, who helped make the series more authentic and one of the most popular in recent times.
