Sweet Magnolias Season 4 – Renewed or Cancelled On Netflix?

Sweet Magnolias Season 4 – Renewed or Cancelled On Netflix?

Like a lot of hit shows, Sweet Magnolias is based on a series of books. Originally written by Sherryl Woods, the first season of the romantic hit drama was released by Netflix in May 2020.

It was our first introduction to best friends Maddie, Dana Sue and Helen as they experience the ups and downs of life in their hometown of Serenity in South Carolina.

Sweet Magnolias was a hit and was quickly renewed for a second season. Which is just as well as there were quite a few threads left hanging at the end of season 1!

If you haven't already watched the show, here's a quick summary of what happened…

Each of our main ladies has her own personal and professional difficulties but they all come together to sort their troubles out over a few margaritas.

Maddie (JoAnna Garcia Swisher) is in the process of getting divorced from her cheating husband (Chris Klein) who got his new girlfriend (Jamie Lynn Spears) pregnant.

Dana Sue (Brooke Elliott) is also separated from her husband, for reasons unknown, and is the owner and head chef of a restaurant called Sullivans.

Helen (Heather Headley) is an accomplished lawyer and though single has decided that she wants to have a child before time runs out.

Knicknamed the ‘Sweet Magnolias' since childhood, these three friends decide to embark on a new project. They buy an old house and renovate it, turning it into a spa. All in all, it's a ‘nice' show about friendship and relationships.

The good news is that the show has a huge following and in its first 30-days on Netflix, season 2 was watched globally on Netflix for 161.3 million hours.

Season 3 was just as successful, hitting the top spot on Netflix around the world.

But is it enough for Netflix to give it the green light for Sweet Magnolias season 4 or has the story come to an end?

In previous seasons the finale has had us gripped. There was a car crash at the end of season1, a bar fight at the end of season 2 and yet, season 3 ended on a rather sweet note with Dana Sue's wedding.

Almost everyone was happy as a clam and with no drama, one had to wonder if we've seen the last of our three favourite friends.

THEY'RE COMING BACK!! Yes, that's right, Netflix have confirmed that Sweet Magnolias season 4 has been given the green light!

The fourth season will have ten episodes but given that they've just made the announcement, there's no word yet on when filming will begin.

As always, we will keep you posted.

Remember that season 1 ended on a bit of a cliffhanger? The ladies and Bill all received a phone call and rushed to the Highway where Ty’s car was flipped over.

Kyle’s unconscious body was taken out of the car onto a stretcher, but the paramedics did not know who the driver is. Well, as Season 2 opens, Maddie, Helen, and Dana Sue learn who is in the car.

Turned out not to be as dramatic as we had all feared. There were a couple of injuries and a lot of blame but overall everybody was fine.

So then Sweet Magnolias season 2 turned its attention to Issac and the search for his birth parents. We quickly found out who his mother but the ‘baby daddy' question dangled like a carrot for most of the season. Honestly, I found the answer a little uninspired but hey ho!

Dana Sue's ex, Ronnie, made himself well and truly at home, desperate to give the marriage another go.

And in the most emotional storyline of the season, Helen got pregnant only to have her hopes of becoming a mother cruelly taken away. But with the return of Ryan at the end of season 2, she has some big decisions to make.

That dramatic ending from season 2, the bar fight with Cal, was met with a bit of a whimper and quickly fizzled out with Cal getting fired from his job. Thankfully, with a little bit of introspection, he got another job and soon life was all rosy again.

His relationship with Maddie had the smallest of bumps before they realised that yes, they are meant to be together.

Helen and Ryan gave their relationship another go. But as always, the path to true love doesn't run smooth and no sooner had Ryan returned to town, to settle his aunt's affairs, and he was off again, leaving Helen alone.

She did however manage to patch things up with Erik, who himself had gone off the rails slightly when he left Sullivans to take a job with Cathy.

Like Cal, he soon saw the error of his ways and was back in Dana Sue's kitchen within a matter of days.

Dana Sue and Ronnie completed their marriage counselling and ended the season on a high note with a renewal of their vows.

And as they say, all's well that ends well!

The three main leads in Sweet Magnolias are played by JoAnna Garcia Swisher (Maddie Townsend), Brooke Elliott (Dana Sue Sullivan) and Heather Headley (Helen Decatur).

The first season also saw excellent supporting roles from Chris Klein as Maddie's soon-to-be ex-husband, Jamie Lynn Spears as his now pregnant girlfriend and Carson Rowland as Tyler “Ty” Townsend – Maddie's teenage son.

And who can forget Cal Maddox, Maddie's new love interest played by Justin Bruening! Two characters that were recurring roles in Season 1 have now been given permanent status in Season 2.

They are Dion Johnstone as Erik Whitley, the sous chef at Sullivan's and Brandon Quinn as Ronnie Sullivan.

And there you have the main cast of Sweet Magnolias as it played out in Season 2!
