The Diplomat Season 2 Release Date – When Is It Coming To Netflix?

Normally we have to wait an absolute age for Netflix to cobble together all of its algorithm results before we find out if our favourite shows have been renewed. Not so with The Diplomat.

In fact, in what seems like almost record time, it only took Netflix TEN days to renew the hit political drama for a second season.

Starring Keri Russell, Rufus Sewell, David Gyasi and Ato Essandoh, we collectively watched over 123 millions of the show in the first 10 days of its release. And we're ready for more!

So now we know that there are more plots and secrets to be uncovered, the big question is: The Diplomat season 2 – When is it coming to Netflix???

The Diplomat Season 2 Release Date

Let's not get carried away here. The show is still a global sensation and is still in the TOP 10 in most countries around the world. So we're not getting new episodes any time soon.

It took a year for season one to go from filming to release and it could be the same for The Diplomat season 2.

The good news is that the ground work has been laid so it may take less time to get season 2 to our screens. But the reality is that these shows generally take at least a year.

So on that basis, we expect a release date for The Diplomat season 2 in Spring 2024.

The Diplomat Season 2 What Happens?

For those of you who binged the first eight episodes, you will know that we left US Ambassador Kate Wyler standing alongside Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison on a bridge in Paris, surrounded by French Police.

They had just realised that the only person with an interest in killing their prime suspect in the bombing of a British Navy vessel, was the person who hired said suspect. And that person is….the British Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge.

Or is it? After all, it's not like Trowbridge every really had an original idea of his own throughout the series!

At the same time, back in London, Stuart Heyford and Hal Wyler were caught in a car bombing. So will they survive and what was it that the MP wanted to tell them?

I wish I could tell you, really I do. But even the show's creator and showrunner, Debora Cahn has been playing her cards very close to her chest.

Speaking to Tudum, all she has said about the finale so far is:

“I wanted it to make people want more.

“I wanted to bring together all of the different dynamics of the political relationships and the personal relationships in one event that splits apart all at the same time.”

Rufus Sewell added: “All I know is that if you resolve it one way or another too quickly, we’re screwed. I like to think there are enough problems to last us [a few seasons].”

How Popular Is The Diplomat?

The Diplomat premiered on April 20 and debuted at No.1 on Netflix’s weekly global Top 10 TV (English) list.

In its first weekend, the series had 57.48 million hours viewed and appeared in the Top 10 in 86 countries.

With word of mouth, The Diplomat surpassed those figures the following week, notching up a further 66,460,000 million hours of watch time.

And not only did we watch it, but we also loved it with the current IMDB score sitting at 8.1/10 from over 32K votes. I should point out that is an extremely high rating!

So will The Diplomat season 2 match up to the success of the first instalment? Only time will tell…

Where Was The Diplomat Filmed?

Filming for The Diplomat occurred at various locations throughout the UK.

In London, the producers obtained official permission to shoot scenes inside the American embassy in Nine Elms, as well as the Foreign Office in Westminster. The Durbar Court and the office of the Foreign Secretary were among the areas used.
