The Rig was a massive hit for Amazon Prime Video when it premiered in January 2023 on Amazon Prime Video.
Set on the Kinloch Bravo oil rig, stationed off the Scottish coast in the North Sea, things get a little eerie for the crew when a mysterious fog rolls through, and they find themselves cut off from the outside world.
The supernatural thriller was created by David Macpherson and is the first Amazon Original to be filmed entirely in Scotland.
So with huge audience numbers, it was only a matter of time before Amazon greenlit The Rig season 2, which they did on February 24th 2023.
The Rig Season 2 Release Date
Given that Amazon has just renewed The Rig, filming has not yet started on the second season.
Filming for the first six episodes took just over five months, beginning in March 2021 and ending in August 2021. It then took another five months to get it to our screens.
So on the basis that the script for The Rig season 2 hasn't even been finalised, we won't be seeing it until 2024.
Realistically, any season of any show generally takes a year to make!
Until then, there are tonnes of other great supernatural thrillers that you can get stuck into – check out some of the great ones here.
The Rig Recap
Isolated on a remote oil rig off the Scottish coast, it's time for the crew to head back to the mainland on the shift helicopter.
That is, until the rig is crippled by the sudden appearance of a spooky rolling bank of fog that obscures everything beyond a few feet.
Crew leader Magnus MacMillan (Iain Glen) struggles to maintain order. He’s hampered by gnarled old hand Lars (Owen Teale) along with communications officer Fulmer (Martin Compston, Line of Duty) and Pictor Oil’s representative, Rose (Emily Hampshire, Schitt’s Creek).
As the mysterious occurrences pile up and crew members fall ill, everybody on board must figure out just what is in the fog and how they can stay alive long enough to combat it.
The Rig Season 2 What Happens?
Details on what exactly will happen in The Rig season 2 is a very closely guarded secret. We do know that the main cast will return, but exactly what the central plot will be, is still unknown.
Of course, as the filming for the second season gets under way, more info will be coming our way and we will, as always, update you!
