There was a time when Netflix viewing figures were a very closely guarded secret.

Nobody, not even the artists involved in the productions, knew the facts and figures about how successful their shows and movies were.

Then Netflix released their Top Ten site which every week breaks down the streaming figures for the top ten series and films globally.

Netflix tallies their viewership by hours watched, rather than by how many accounts watched a particle program in full.

That said, it is a still a perfectly acceptable way to gauge the success of any production, especially when you are dealing with over 100 million accounts around the world.

So based on hours spent watching movie, here are the top ten most watched movies on Netflix ever!

There is no disputing that Ryan Reynolds, Dwayne Johnson and Gal Gadot are box office gold. So putting all three into a blockbuster action-packed flick was genius.

So much so that Red Notice is currently the most watched movie on Netflix – ever!

The high-scale heist adventure directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber is a simple but fun movie that follows an FBI investigator who teams up with an art thief to catch a much more skilled criminal.

Unsurprisingly, Red Notice did not sit well with the critics but fans loved it. It spent 13 weeks in the Global Top 10 Films with viewers watching it for more than 364,020,000 hours!


If it's the biggest names in Hollywood that you're looking for then Don't Look Up from Academy Award winning director Adam McKay is the movie for you.

With Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence at the helm, the film follows Kate Dibiasky who discovers a previously unknown comet. Her professor, Dr. Randall Mindy, confirms that it will collide with the Earth and is large enough to cause a planet-wide extinction event.

A satirical look at how satire of government, political, celebrity, and media indifference to the climate crisis.

Viewership topped 359.8 million hours, making it the second most-watched film within 28 days of release on Netflix.


One of the biggest stars in Hollywood, Sandra Bullock takes the lead in the third most watched movie ever on Netflix.

Bird Box is a post-apocalyptic thriller directed by Susanne Bier and based on the 2014 novel of the same name by Josh Malerman.

Like The Quiet Place but with eyes, Bird Box follows Malorie Hayes as she tries to protect herself and two children from entities which cause people who look at them to die by suicide.

On release in 2018, it become the most-watched film on Netflix within 28 days of release. However, it has since been pushed down the list by Red Notice and Don't Look Up.


Where would Netflix be without Ryan Reynolds??

Not only is he the star of the most watched Netflix film ever in Red Notice but he also leads The Adam Project, the fourth most watched movie on the list.

It's 2050 and fighter pilot Adam Reed steals a time jet to escape to 2018 to save his wife, Laura Shane.

But when he crash lands in 2022 he meets his 12-year-old self and the two must then work together to go back to 2018 and change their lives forever.


The action-packed movie starring Chris Hemsworth premiered on Netflix in 2020 and quickly became one of most-watched movies on the streaming platform.

Directed by Sam Hargrave and written by Joe Russo, the film follows Tyler Rake, a black ops mercenary, whose mission to save an Indian drug lord's kidnapped son goes awry when he is double-crossed.

The success of Extraction, which was watched by more than 99 million households, was more than enough to get the thumbs up for a sequel.

Extraction 2 began filming in December 2021 is expected to come out on Netflix either in late 2022 or 2023.


Sandra Bullock wowed Netflix audiences with Bird Box and she did it again with The Unforgivable (2021), the sixth most watched movie on Netflix of all time.

The drama follows Ruth Slater after she is released from prison having serving twenty years for murdering a sheriff who came to evict her and her five-year-old sister, Katie.

And so begins the search for her estranged younger sister Katie. But things are made far more difficult as revenge and retribution rear their ugly heads in this excellent drama.


When you get Martin Scorsese on board, things are done a little differently at Netflix. Rather than just go straight to streaming, The Irishman was also given a cinema release, making it eligible for awards season.

Bringing together long-time Martin Scorsese collaborators such as Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci the film follows Frank Sheeran, a truck driver who becomes a hitman involved with mobster Russell Bufalino, including working for the powerful Teamster Jimmy Hoffa.

With a run time of more than three hours, the movie was also nominated for 10 Academy Awards.


The Kissing Booth was a major hit for Netflix and made superstars out of its two leads, Joey King and Jacob Elordi.

However, it was the second movie in the trilogy that garnered the highest audience viewership with over 66 million households watching the flick within 28 days of its release.


Ryan Reynolds is back AGAIN with 6 Underground, his third film in the top 10 most watched Netflix movies ever.

The 2019 action thriller film is directed by Michael Bay follows American billionaire Magnet S. Johnson (Reynolds), who fakes his own death to form an anonymous vigilante squad to take down criminals and terrorists which the world will not pursue.

It's action-packed and was unsurprisingly panned by critics. Despite huge viewership figures the sequel that had been greenlit was then cancelled.


The 2020 action comedy film directed by Peter Berg stars Mark Wahlberg as an ex-cop who teams up with his no-nonsense roommate Hawk to take down criminals when two police officers are murdered.

The film also stars Winston Duke, Alan Arkin, Iliza Shlesinger and Post Malone and was so successful for Netflix that in September 2020, a sequel was confirmed to be in development with Berg, Helgeland, and Wahlberg returning.

It's clear that Ryan Reynolds is the man to beat when it comes to pulling in the audiences but overall us Netflix fans seem to love an action packed flick more than any other genre.
