A young janitor at MIT, Will Hunting, has a gift for math and chemistry but can't ever imagine leaving his childhood Boston South End neighborhood, his construction job, or his best friend, so he tells nobody about it.

However, when he completes an impossible maths equation, his life becomes more complicated until he meets a kind therapist (Williams) who identifies with Will's blue-collar roots, and a gifted pre-med student who shows him the possibility of love.

Who Wrote Good Will Hunting?

The script for Good Will Hunting started out as a final assignment for a playwriting class Matt Damon was taking at Harvard University.

Damon then asked his friend Ben Affleck to develop the screenplay together and they completed the script in 1994. Matt Damon was 24 years old and Ben Affleck was 22 years old.

Castle Rock Entertainment bought the script for $675,000 but didn't want Damon and Affleck to star in the film. They then had to find another buyer, and in stepped Miramax, who paid Castle Rock back their money and agreed to let the two friends lead the movie.

And the rest, as they say, is history.

The 1997 drama film Good Will Hunting was filmed mainly in Boston, Massachusetts, with interiors shot at the University of Toronto campus in Toronto, Ontario which doubled as MIT and Harvard University.

The Bow and Arrow Pub doubled as the exterior of the Harvard bar in which Will met Skylar for the first time.
