What Does Netflix Original Mean?

Netflix Original

Anybody with a Netflix subscription knows that there's a vast amount of content on the platform. Not all of it is created by Netflix or commissioned by it.

Often, Netflix will licence shows and movies from other networks or countries and pay for the distribution rights around the world.

But there's a booming industry behind Netflix Originals, shows you really cannot get anywhere else.

What Does Netflix Original Mean?

Netflix Original is an umbrella term used to describe TV shows and movies that are created, produced or distributed by Netflix.

These works are exclusive to the streaming platform and cannot be found on other competing sites.

With so many Netflix Originals, it's tricky to whittle down the list to the 10 most popular. As the years have passed and the subscription numbers have increased, newer shows will often get more viewers.

With multiple seasons, many are award-winning and launched the platform long before viewing figures became the dominating factor on whether or not a show was considered successful.

Why Does It Say Netflix Original Series When It's Not?

Netflix Originals are titles produced by Netflix that are exclusive to the streaming platform.

While some of these shows may have started elsewhere, they are completed and distributed exclusively by Netflix.

Additionally, any seasons beyond the first season of a show will be considered a Netflix Original since they were premiered on the platform.

The Difference Between A Netflix Original And A Limited Series?

Netflix Originals are series and films that are produced and released solely by Netflix, while Netflix Limited series are shows that have been licensed to Netflix or acquired in a very limited capacity.

While some of these shows may have started elsewhere, they are completed and distributed exclusively by Netflix.

Compared to a Netflix Original, a limited series is made up of fewer episodes than the traditional season count, generally between four and six.

The difference between the two lies mainly in the exclusivity of a title: a Netflix Original can only be found on the platform, but a Limited Series may also be available on other services as well.

A Netflix Limited Series is generally just one season with an entire story wrapped up completely. There is rarely a second season. One exception is The Alienist, which although limited, did get another run.
