What Is Cocaine Bear About?

In 1985, Andrew C. Thornton II, a drug smuggler, accidentally drops a shipment of cocaine from his plane. As he tries to parachute out with a duffel bag filled with drugs, he falls to his death.

His body lands in Knoxville, Tennessee, where a local detective named Bob (Isiah Whitlock Jr.) identifies him. Bob suspects that the cocaine is connected to Syd White (Ray Liotta), a notorious drug kingpin from St. Louis, and realises that a portion of the drugs is missing.

Meanwhile, in the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest, an American black bear consumes some of the cocaine, causing it to become highly aggressive.

In a different part of the forest, a middle schooler named Dee Dee (Brooklynn Prince) lives with her mother, Sari (Keri Russell, The Diplomat), who works as a nurse.

While exploring the trail, Dee Dee and Henry (Christian Convery) stumble upon a lost brick of cocaine before being attacked by the rampaging bear.

Sari, concerned for her daughter's safety, ventures into the forest to search for the children. She is joined by Liz (Margo Martindale), a park ranger, and Peter (Jesse Tyler Ferguson), a wildlife activist.

Everything goes crazy as the bear goes on a rampage and it all connects back to Syd and his associate Daveed (O'Shea Jackson Jr.) who is sent to retrieve the remaining cocaine.

What happens then would only spoil the movie so I'll leave it up to you to watch it instead!

Where Was Cocaine Bear Filmed?

Surprisingly, Cocaine Bear was not filmed in the US. In fact, it was filmed entirely in Ireland.

Specific locations include Dublin, Powerscourt, County Wicklow, Avoca, County Wicklow and the woods in Barnaslingan, County Dublin, Ireland.

Principal photography took place between August 20 and October 17, 2021 at a cost of $30–35 million. To be fair, most of that was spent to create the CGI bear.

But it did make nearly $90 million at the box office so overall was a good return on the money.
