What Is Top Gun: Maverick About?

It has been more than 30 years since we first met Maverick Mitchell, and over that time, his repeated insubordination has kept him from rising through the ranks.

When Maverick's hypersonic “Darkstar” scramjet program is in danger of being cancelled, he once again pushes things too far and destroys the prototype. In steps his friend Iceman Kazansky who is now commander of the Pacific Fleet, to save his career.

He gets assigned to the Top Gun school at NAS North Island for his next assignment, where he must confront his past as he trains a group of younger pilots.

As he prepares the graduates for the top-secret assignment, Maverick has to navigate through an uncomfortable relationship with the son of his deceased best friend.

Where Was Top Gun: Maverick Filmed?

To say that a huge amount of work went into Top Gun: Maverick is an understatement. Cruise wanted everything as real as possible, so the filming schedule was intense.

Aerial shots were filmed at Naval Air Station Fallon with the crew allowed aboard the Norfolk-based aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln to shoot flight deck operations.

Filming also took place in the Cascade Mountains at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island in Oak Harbor, Washington.

Other locations include:

San Diego, Los Angeles, the Lake Tahoe Airport, the Naval Air Station Lemoore in California, El Dorado County for the mountainous terrain and river canyons, and Eldorado National Forest in California for the forested mountain aircraft staging area.

Scenes were also shot in Sierra District State Parks, Inyokern Airport, and Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.

The budget for Top Gun: Maverick was a whopping $170,000,000.

But when you consider that producers paid the Navy $11,374 per flight hour for F/A-18E and F/A-18F Super Hornets and pilots to fly them, it easy to see where the money was spent!
