Often small, lower-budget movies can get overlooked when they come up against big blockbuster hits. Not so with Aftersun (2022).

The coming-of-age drama film was written and directed by Charlotte Wells and stars Paul Mescal, Frankie Corio and Celia Rowlson-Hall.

Set in the early 2000s, the film follows Sophie, an 11-year-old girl, on holiday with her father at a resort in Turkey on the eve of his 31st birthday.

Released in the US in October 2022 by A24, Aftersun has received acclaim from critics, with Paul Mescal earning a nomination for Best Actor at the 95th Academy Awards.

It is a gem of a movie, so if you want to watch Aftersun, here is where you can stream it…

For the most part, Aftersun is NOT available as part of ANY streaming subscription yet.

It is still in some cinemas, so if you want to stream it at home, you may have to RENT or BUY it.

For every other country, it is not available to stream on any platform. However, this will change over the next few months, so we will keep you up to date when that happens.

What Is Aftersun About?

This is a story about a father and his 11-year-old daughter Sophie.

Set in the 2000s, the now-grown Sophie looks back at a rare time she spent together with her loving father, Calum (Paul Mescal), on holiday in Turkey.

Twenty years later, Sophie's tender recollections of that holiday together becomes a powerful and heartrending portrait of their relationship in Charlotte Wells' superb and emotional debut film.

Basically, get the tissues out because Aftersun is a film that will leave you in tears.

Is The Aftersun Film (2022) On Netflix?

At the time of writing this, Aftersun is not available on Netflix.

In fact, it is only included with a MUBI subscription. So if your country has MUBI, you can watch Aftersun.

If it doesn't, then you must rent or purchase the movie. But it's worth it!

This will change in the next few months, but as of yet, there is no way of knowing which streaming services will have the rights to distribute it around the world.

That said, A24 who distribute the film, also produced Everything Everywhere All at Once which streamed exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.

So perhaps Aftersun will go there when it eventually makes it to streaming platforms.

Is Aftersun Based On A True Story?

That question has both a yes and a no answer. While it is isn't specifically about Charlotte Well's life, she has said that over the course of writing the script, she got more and more of herself into both characters.

Wells’ first short, Tuesday (2015), was about the loss of her father, which happened when she was a teenager.

Speaking to Variety in May 2022, Well stated that Aftersun explores a different period in that type of relationship and felt like it could be something interesting and fun and compelling.
