American Psycho is undoubtedly one of the great classic horror movies, brought to life by the incredible performance from Christian Bale.

Released in 2000, the film is directed by Mary Harron, who co-wrote the screenplay with Guinevere Turner.

It is based on the 1991 novel by Bret Easton Ellis and follows the story of Patrick Bateman, a New York City investment banker who leads a double life as a serial killer.


Despite the author of the book believing his original story to be unfilmable, Harron got it to the big screen, where it went on to gross over $34 million on a $7 million budget.

What Is American Psycho About?

It is the late 1980s. Wall Streeter Patrick Bateman spends most of his time living the high life with his fiancée Evelyn Williams and his circle of wealthy associates, most of whom he actually hates.

He is vain, narcissistic and competitive, always having to one up everyone else. But all of this is just to hide what is truly underneath the surface.

Bateman is filled with greed, envy and disgust and at night descends into madness, as he experiments with fear and violence.

Why Is American Psycho Rated R?

Given its content, it comes as no surprise that American Psycho was rated R for strong violence and language, sexual content, drug use, and some nudity.

These elements are essential to showing how Patrick’s twisted mental state turns him into a serial killer while also conveying his intense inner struggles with morality.

There is graphic violence throughout the film which is especially grisly due to its style of filming. In addition to that, American Psycho contains various amounts of profanity and sexuality which further drove up its rating.

How Old Was Christian Bale In American Psycho?

American Psycho featured Christian Bale (The Pale Blue Eye) as the titular character, Patrick Bateman. At the time of filming, Bale was 26 years old.

He was already an accomplished actor prior to playing Bateman and had starred in films such as Empire of the Sun and Velvet Goldmine.

Bale gained a lot of attention for his performance in this role due to its complexity.

He managed to portray Patrick as an emotionally unstable and psychotic individual while also maintaining a comedic air in certain scenes.

All while being able to showcase his range by diving into Patrick's inner struggles with morality and sanity.

What Happens At The End Of American Psycho?

SPOILER ALERT: American Psycho ends with the audience being left in a state of confusion and disbelief.

After committing multiple grisly murders, Patrick Bateman wakes up one morning with no memory of what he did the night before. He is soon taken away by two detectives who arrest him for a murder which wasn't even shown in the movie.

This leaves us wondering whether any of the events throughout the film actually happened or if it was all merely a product of Patrick's sick imagination.

American Psycho ends without any definitive answers, we simply don't know if Patrick ever actually committed the murders or if it was just all in his mind.
