Few movies can claim to be so outrageously bonkers that they turn out to be absolutely brilliant. Case in point is Everything Everywhere All at Once, a 2022 absurdist science fiction comedy-drama film written and directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert.
Produced by Anthony and Joe Russo, this movie is an epic rollercoaster of timelines, characters, plots, and action. At the center of it all is the always amazing Michelle Yeoh.
Everything Everywhere All at Once premiered in March 2022 before a wide release by A24 on April 8, 2022. It was a massive success and grossed over $140 million worldwide on a budget of just $25M.
It became A24's first film to cross the $100 million mark and surpassed Hereditary (2018) as its highest-grossing film.

What Is Everything Everywhere All at Once About?
Everything Everywhere All at once is a tricky movie to sum up, but I'll give it my best shot…
Evelyn Quan (Michelle Yeoh) runs a laundromat with her husband Waymond Wang (Ke Huy Quan), some two decades after they eloped to the United States and had a daughter, Joy.
Evelyn's life is a mess. Her marriage is failing, her daughter doesn't speak to her, and the IRS is auditing the laundromat.
At a meeting with IRS inspector Deirdre Beaubeirdre (Jamie Lee Curtis), Waymond's body is briefly taken over by Alpha-Waymond, a version of Waymond from the “Alphaverse”.
He explains to Evelyn that many parallel universes exist because every life choice creates a new alternate universe.
There they have developed “verse-jumping” technology, which enables people to access the skills, memories, and bodies of their parallel-universe selves.
The multiverse is now threatened by Jobu Tupaki, the Alphaverse version of Joy (Stephanie Hsu), whose mind was splintered. Now Evelyn must get to grips not only with this new information but with the technology to jump through time to stop Joy from destroying the world.
Why Is It Rated R
It may seem like a superhero or time jump movie, but there are quite graphic elements in Everything Everywhere All at Once, which means it is unsuitable for younger viewers.
The film is quite complicated to follow, there is bad language and quite a few killings in bizarre ways that you don't want your kids to see.
Why Is Everything Everywhere All at Once So Good
Here's my take on it, for what it's worth. What makes this film so good is that despite the parallel universes, the incredible special effects, the original concept, and a slew of outstanding performances, at the heart of it, none of that matters.
This is about unfulfilled dreams, the struggles of a mother-daughter relationship, and the re-imagination of what life could really be like if you had made different choices.
Strip away all the effects, and what is left is the story of one woman's daily grind just to get through a mediocre life.
It has real depth, which is often lacking in action movies, so when we see it in Everything Everywhere All at Once, the movie is instantly elevated above its peers. And that's why it's so good.
Everything Everywhere all at Once made history in 2023. The movie received 11 Academy Award nominations, out of which it won seven, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress for Yeoh, Best Supporting Actor for Quan, Best Supporting Actress for Curtis, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Film Editing.
It also received 10 BAFTA nominations, winning one, 13 Critics' Choice Movie Awards nominations, winning five, eight Independent Spirit Awards nominations, winning a record-breaking seven, and six Golden Globe Awards nominations, winning two.
The National Board of Review and the American Film Institute named it one of the top 10 films of 2022, and it became the fifth movie to sweep all four top prizes from the major guilds.
The movie made Academy Awards history in several categories. Michelle Yeoh became the first woman of Chinese ethnicity to win Best Actress, the second woman of color after Halle Berry in 2002, and the first Malaysian to win any Academy Award.
The movie also marked the first time two Asian actresses were nominated in the same year for the Best Supporting Actress category.
Ke Huy Quan became the first Vietnam-born actor to win an Academy Award.
The movie is also the first science-fiction film to win Best Picture and the first science-fiction film to win five of the top six Academy Awards.
It is the third movie to win three out of four acting categories and the first to also win Best Picture.
