Based on the books by Caroline Kepnes and developed by Greg Berlanti and Sera Gamble, the mega-hit thriller YOU, first aired on Lifetime in 2018.
It was one of those shows that had a loyal following, but the ratings didn't materialise. Although Lifetime did renew the show, it was moved to Netflix which bought the rights to it.
And it was here that the vast majority of us first met Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley). On the surface, Joe is a lovely guy. He works in a book shop, is quiet, cute and seems pretty normal.
Except by now, we all know that he is anything but. Joe is in fact a serial killer who falls in love to the point of obsession.
So how on earth has he not been caught by now?? And when can we expect to see YOU Season 5 on our tv screens??
YOU Season 5 – When Is It Coming To Netflix?
As usual, we have both good and bad news on the You Season 5 front. The good news is that Netflix has officially renewed the show and confirmed that we will get YOU Season 5.
The bad news is that it will be THE LAST SEASON. So Joe Goldberg's story is finally coming to an end.
The Netflix press release reads… “Will Joe Goldberg finally get his judgment day? Fans of the beloved thriller will soon know more about Joe's fate when You returns for a fifth and final season.”
Further details for the plot of YOU season 5 details will be revealed in the near future.
However, the good news is that creator Sera Gamble already has a few ideas on where Joe is headed. We left him back in NYC with his rich new girlfriend, Kate, and Gamble has said that a renewal will pick up from there.
In what could be a full circle moment, Joe Goldberg is back on his home turf but his anonymity is gone so just how will he get away with holding people hostage in his glass cage??
No doubt Gamble has some great ideas, which if we're lucky, we will get to see in YOU season 5. As usual, no filming dates have been confirmed, but we do know that from the moment it wraps, we normally get the episodes six months later.
YOU Season 1 Recap
Joe meets Guinevere Beck, an aspiring writer and he falls head over heels. Ensuring that Beck will have no choice but to feel the same way, he stalks her, removing obstacles on their path to true love.
But of course, Beck ultimately uncovers his twisted life and finds herself trapped in a glass cage. Thinking she has escaped (spoiler, she hasn't) she in turn traps him. But Joe is a clever guy, and soon he is out, kills Guinevere, dumps her body and frames the innocent Dr. Nicky for her murder.
Even Joe knows that it's time to get out of dodge so off he goes, taking us to YOU season 2.
YOU Season 2 Recap
Joe leaves New York behind and moves to Los Angeles to start again with a new identity. We quickly learn that he already has his eyes set on Love Quinn and in order to get close to her, steals the identity of a man named Will.
He takes his apartment and gets a job in a grocery store where Quinn works. Soon Goldberg is falling into his old patterns of violence and obsession, but there are two things he doesn't know.
Will is not squeaky clean and owes a lot of money. Though the situation is quickly taken care of, Joe has another problem. Love has her own dark secrets and a rather dysfunctional family.
With all of the deception and problems they face, can they make it work?
We find out in YOU Season 3!
YOU Season 3 Recap
Joe and Love are still together and drumroll please….are expecting a baby. Yes, those two psychos are actually having a child. But it seems that being married and raising a child isn't enough to keep Joe from his true self.
His latest obsession is their next-door neighbour, Natalie Engler. Sensing her happily ever after is in danger, Love decides to eliminate the Natalie problem.
But that's not enough to stop Joe who turns his attention to the local librarian Marienne. To up the ante even more, Marienne's stepson becomes obsessed with Love. No prizes for guessing how poor Theo fairs in that particular relationship!
Of course, there are the usual affairs, murders and accusations but ultimately, Joe must once again reinvent himself as he heads to Paris after Marienne.
YOU Season 4
For any of you that may have been worried that Netflix wouldn't renew the show, YOU Season 4 was another ratings hit for Netflix.
Penn Badgley returned as Joe Goldberg alongside Tati Gabrielle (Chilling Adventure of Sabrina) who reprised her role as Marienne Bellamy.
YOU Season 4 began filming, mainly in London, in March 2022 and wrapped in August. It was then released in TWO parts, just to keep us all hanging on, with the first five episodes dropping on February 9th, 2023 and the second set airing on March 9th 2023.
And boy, was it a doozy…
We followed Joe as he moved to London, pretended to a professor, made himself some friends and then the bodies started falling.
So far, so good until that almighty twist at the end… *SPOILER ALERT* … Joe's new buddy Rhys, who also happened to be a bit of a serial killer himself, had been dead for quite some time and he was all in Joe's head. Eeek!
Has Joe finally snapped? Or is Rhys a part of Joe that allows him to keep killing because ‘the real Joe' just can't do it anymore??
I think we're gonna find out in You Season 5!
