Bill Burr is one of the funniest and most well-known comedians working today. And there is a very good reason for this. He's not afraid of his opinions or jokes and he uses the perfect blend of both observational and personal comedy. He can switch tack instantly and go from talking about AI to stories from his childhood. And just as quickly, flip back again without missing a beat.
Interestingly enough, and having watched a lot of Bill Burr, it's always his first-hand anecdotes that are the funniest. Paper Tiger has these in abundance. The standup special starts off with a few observational remarks. For me personally, some were downright hilarious, others sort of missed the mark. But then he gets into his flow and the laughs are non-stop.
One of the things I find fascinating about Bill Burr is his ability to take what should not be a funny story and turn it into a funny story. You somehow find yourself laughing at a situation, that is, in reality, quite heartbreaking. Only Bill Burr could talk about having to give his dog away and make it ludicrously comedic. It's all in the delivery.
If you've only seen the trailer, then I suggest that you dismiss it and watch the full show instead. The trailer for Bill Burr Paper Tiger is almost purposely disingenuous and just a tad click-baity. It looks like all Bill Burr will do is take aim at the likes of the #MeToo movement or other hot button topics when in reality, it's nothing like that.
In fact, once you get passed the first five minutes of the opening, 99% of his standup Paper Tiger isn't provocative at all. What it does do, on occasion, is force you to look at things from a different perspective. And maybe it's one you hadn't considered before. But it's done with a slick delivery and with a healthy dose of fun.
Bill Burr Paper Tiger is a blast. If you like a good stand-up special then make sure this is on your list.
