She might feel pretty but I feel like I completely and utterly wasted one hour and fifty one minutes of my life. Yes, I Feel Pretty is that bad. So bad, in fact that I'm really going to struggle to find anything positive to say about it. So here goes…
Amy Schumer plays Renee Bennett, who for all intents and purposes, is a perfectly normal young woman. Work is good but not great. Her apartment is small but not a dump. She has lovely friends and sure, she might be single, but that's not the end of the world. However, Renee's biggest problem is that she seems to think if she was skinny and ‘beautiful' she would be happier. Because apparently that's the answer to all of life's problems (insert eye-rolling emoji here).
Working for a high end cosmetics company Renee dreams of a job in the head office, not a downtown basement where the tech dept resides. She decides to enrol in a spin class but falls off the bike and whacks her head. When she wakes up in the changing room, she imagines herself suddenly transformed into the fabulous beauty she always dreamed of. It's all in her head. Nothing about her is different at all.
Buoyed with a new found sense of confidence, from thinking she's gorgeous, she gets the dream receptionist job in head office. Her boss, and head of the company is Avery LeClaire, played by Michelle Williams. How on earth they got her to do this role is beyond me. Honestly, she plays an insecure, borderline idiot with an irritatingly high pitched voice. It's just weird. Anyway, she's starting a new, more commercial line of make-up and finds Renee to be the perfect ‘normal' person she can bounce ideas off.
As Renee's life becomes steadily more glamourous, her personality becomes decidedly more bitchy. And of course, it's her life long friends who feel the impact the most. That is until it all comes crashing down around her.
SPOILER ALERT! I Feel Pretty is a terrible movie. The entire premise is based on a girl truly believing that she has to be thin to be happy. But worse than that, it is not funny, the script is awful and the faux happy ending is vomit inducing. If you have any sense at all, you will SWERVE it.
If you want an actually funny rom-com then check out Isn't It Romantic instead. It's a million times better and Rebel Wilson is hilarious!
