TV Comedy Jane The Virgin is a huge hit and if you haven't seen it already then this could be your next show to absolutely binge on.
It is an American comedy drama created by Jennie Snyder Urman. It premiered in October 2014 on The CW and concluded on July 31, 2019 after five seasons.
And that means you can sit and binge the entire show without having to wait for another season!
What Is Jane the Virgin About?
Jane The Virgin stars the brilliant Gina Rodriguez as Jane Villanueva, the show's heroine. Despite her own mother giving birth to her as a 16 year old, Jane is determined that her life will take a completely different path.
She is a working, religious Latina virgin with a long term boyfriend called Michael. Then her whole world is turned upside down.
After a trip to a doctor, she becomes pregnant after accidentally being artificially inseminated. The baby daddy turns out to be Rafael Solano, a multi-millionaire hotel owner. And the boss where Jane works.
It was his wife Petra that was supposed to be the original recipient of said donation before the mix-up occurred.
As if things aren't complicated enough, Rafael (Justin Baldoni) is also Jane's former teenage crush. However, when her family support Jane's decision to keep the baby, she dutifully cracks on with life as an expectant mother.
She also has to wrestle her feelings for both Michael Cordero (her boyfriend) and Rafael who ultimately falls in love with her.
Add her mother Xiomara (Andrea Navedo) and grandmother Alba (Ivonne Coll) into the mix – as she still lives at home – and you have the recipe for an award winning show.
Especially when Jane's biological father, Rogelio de la Vega (Jaime Camil) turns up with his own issues.
Is Jane The Virgin Worth Watching?
What makes the series a standout is the fact that it parodies commonly used tropes and devices in Latin telenovelas.
There is a brilliantly funny voiceover throughout intermingled with flashes of Jane's imagination and the script is genius.
It's clever and witty and Gina Rodriguez (Someone Great) won numerous awards for her portrayal of Jane but, it is pretty drawn out.
Once you get over the lunacy of some of the plot lines and just when you think a story has been wrapped up back it comes to be eeked out even more.
And that does get annoying especially when it involves characters that are constantly being duped.
But if you can get over that you will enjoy it. It's easy watching, not particularly taxing and overall is fun to binge on.
Cast of Jane The Virgin
A show like Jane the Virgin has to have very likeable and relatable characters. We need a hero to root for and that's why you will grow to love Jane Villanueva as much as us.
Gina Rodriguez plays the starring role as Jane Gloriana Villanueva, a 23-year-old, religious Latina virgin who becomes pregnant after being artificially inseminated by mistake.
Jenna Ortega as Young Jane, at age 10, is the most frequent (21 chapters as of season 3) of the four younger “Janes” seen in flashbacks.
Andrea Navedo as Xiomara “Xo” Gloriana Villanueva, Jane's outgoing mother. She is a dance teacher, but dreams of having a singing career. She marries Jane's father in the Season three finale.
Justin Baldoni as Rafael Solano, the 31-year-old owner of the Marbella Hotel and the biological father of Jane's child, who has fallen out of love with his wife.
Yael Grobglas as Petra Solano, Rafael's scheming and cheating wife.
Ivonne Coll as Alba Gloriana Villanueva, Jane's pious maternal grandmother. She is highly religious, and encourages Jane to save her virginity until marriage. While she is able to speak English, she only speaks Spanish with her family, even when they address her in English.
Brett Dier as Michael Cordero Jr. Jane's 29-year-old original boyfriend who is a police detective.
Yara Martinez as Dr. Luisa Alver, Rafael's neurotic, recovering alcoholic older sister, and the doctor who accidentally artificially inseminated Jane.
Jaime Camil as Rogelio de la Vega, a self-involved, famous telenovela star and Jane's biological father. He also has feelings for Xiomara, who was his girlfriend in high school.
Elias Janssen as Mateo Solano Villanueva (seasons 4–5), Jane and Rafael's baby. Named after Jane's grandfather and Alba's husband, who died before Jane was born.
Bridget Regan as Rose, a former lawyer and former girlfriend of Luisa. Lots of hints that she could also be the crime lord Sin Rostro. We find out in the third season.
Who Is The Narrator In Jane The Virgin?
Without a doubt, Jane the Virgin would not the hit show without the funny and sarcastic voiceover from the narrator.
Anthony Mendez voiced the Latin Lover Narrator. In the series finale there was a twist when it was revealed who the character was but no spoilers here. You'll have to watch to find out.
