Pirate Gold of Adak Island is set on Adak Island, part of the Aleutian Islands in Alaska. During World War Two, it was occupied by the Japanese until American forces pushed them from the island chain in 1943.
The U.S. Navy garrisoned the island and turned it into a fortress; the base had over 6000 personnel at its peak. In 1943, a Navy worker was constructing a pathway between two huts when he found a tin can containing hundreds of gold coins dating from the 1880s and 1890s.
PIRATE TREASURE?
It was concluded that the coins belonged to Captain Gregory Dwargstof, a Russian seal poacher who operated in and around the islands during the 1800s.
The U.S. Government targeted the illegal poaching operation and sent the Navy to seize Dwargstof and his fleet. However, before the authorities could arrest the captain, he fled in his fastest ship to hide the profits of his poaching.
He headed to Adak Island and buried the cans of gold coins all over the island, hoping to return and collect his booty later.
However, Captain Dwargstof was captured before he could return to claim his fortune.
