The Night Agent follows FBI Agent Peter Sutherland who is tasked with manning the night action phone in the White House and then one night it rings...

Have you ever noticed how tv shows go through genre phases? In any given period, a theme dominates the tv – vampires, teen dramas, cop shows, etc…and now it seems we have re-entered the ‘spy' phase, with The Night Agent the latest addition.

Based on the novel by Matthew Quirk, The Night Agent stars Gabriel Basso, Luciane Buchanan, and Hong Chau. It is very much a character based action-thriller that is played out over ten episodes in the first season.

But for those of you who haven't watched it, the burning question is what is it all about and is it worth watching?

What Is The Night Agent About?

The Night Agent begins with a foiled plot to blow up a metro train, stopped only because of the quick thinking of FBI Agent Peter Sutherland. Rewarded for his bravery, he is offered a dual role working for both the agency and the White House.

The job is monotonous and boring and requires him to work at the night action desk, in a windowless office in the basement of the White House, manning a phone that never rings. Until one night, it does.

On the other end is Rose Larkin, a young woman whose aunt and uncle are being attacked in their home. It soon becomes apparent that they are Night Agents, basically spies, and now that they have been killed, chaos ensues as everybody in the White House needs to know exactly what happened and how they were murdered.

Realising that Rose is still in danger from the assassins hot on her heels, Peter Sutherland springs into action to protect her.

However, when they discover that her aunt and uncle uncovered a dangerous conspiracy that ultimately leads all the way to the Oval Office, they decide to investigate themselves, not knowing who they can actually trust.

So can Peter and Rose unravel the secrets of the White House and stop an impending disaster from rocking the US? Find out in The Night Agent!

Is The Night Agent Worth Watching?

From the get-go, it's clear that The Night Agent is a cut above most series being churned out on Netflix. Now I'm not saying that there aren't some gems on the streaming platform, but in its vast library of content, they can be tricky to find.

So I was pleasantly surprised by the non-cliched start to the show, which put a low-level FBI agent in a very boring job. From there, the script makes sense. A woman in trouble calls, everybody realises she's in grave danger, and Peter is tasked with keeping her safe overnight.

Then the plot of the show really kicks in, and the cat-and-mouse chase begins as the duo discovers the deadly conspiracy involving ‘somebody' in the Oval office.

I don't want to give any spoilers away but there are plenty of layers in The Night Agent. With unexpected twists and intense action scenes, the series keeps you on your toes as its various characters try to unravel what exactly is going on.

And to be fair to the scriptwriters, they do a great job of keeping you guessing. It's only toward the end that everything starts to fall into place, and the pieces of the puzzle come together.

The Night Agent is an intriguing spy thriller that will have you hooked from start to finish. Gabriel basso is excellent as loyal and committed FBI Agent who is wrestling with his own personal demons.

And thankfully, we finally have a ‘victim' that doesn't just sit around and feel sorry for herself in Rose, who is feisty and somewhat relatable as a young woman thrown in the deep end.

The Night Agent is an intriguing spy thriller that will have you hooked from start to finish. That said, I binged it and found that it was probably two episodes too long. Almost as if they committed to ten episodes, so had to drag it out more than necessary.

But that's a minor complaint. And it's clear from the ending, which in fairness wraps up the story, that a second season could be on the cards.

Is There A Second Season Of The Night Agent?

As of yet, there is no word from Netflix as to whether or not The Night Agent will get a second season.

The story was left with a direction for the show to go in, and the ratings for the series are exceptional, so fingers crossed Netflix greenlights another season.
