Based on the 2013 novel of the same name by Soman Chainani, The School for Good and Evil is a fantasy film directed by Paul Feig.
If you're already a fan of the book, just be aware that this movie is not a re-hash.
The book's author Soman Chainani has already said that the film will be a “very different animal”, and only some of the key moments have been recreated.
So while it is an adaptation, it is more in ‘the spirit' of the novel and goes in a slightly different direction.
What Is The School For Good And Evil About?
In the village of Gavaldon, every four years, two children, age 12 and older, are kidnapped and spirited away to The School for Good and Evil.
It is an enchanted school where aspiring heroes and villains are trained to protect the balance between Good and Evil.
While many fear being chosen, Sophie (Sophia Anne Caruso) dreams of being kidnapped to become a princess. Her sulky best friend Agatha (Sofia Wylie) is deemed the perfect candidate for the School for Evil.
Both are kidnapped and, to their horror, are sent to the “wrong” schools. Sophie ends up in the School for Evil as a ‘Never', run by the glamorous and acid-tongued Lady Lesso (Charlize Theron).
Agatha finds herself as a student in the School for Good as an ‘Ever', run by the sunny and kind Professor Dovey (Kerry Washington).
Sophie tries to switch schools with Agatha, but Agatha just wants them both to go home.
They soon discover that according to the Schoolmaster (Laurence Fishburne), only true love's kiss can change the rules.
So can Sophie and Agatha find their rightful schools and destiny? Or will the dark and dangerous figure that threatens to destroy the school and the world beyond get in their way?

Is The School For Good And Evil Worth Watching?
This movie ticks so many boxes that it is impossible not to like it.
Firstly, Paul Feig is a legendary director with credits like Bridesmaids, A Simple Favor, Someone Great and Last Christmas under his belt.
Secondly, who can argue with an outstanding ensemble cast that includes Charlize Theron, Kerry Washington, Laurence Fishburne, Michelle Yeoh, Peter Serafinowicz, Patti LuPone and Ben Kingsley??? Even Cate Blanchett narrates it.
Thirdly, it brings a fantasy world to life in the most extraordinary way. From insane costume design to sublime set design, most of which was actually constructed to avoid using green screens, every tiny thing about The School For Good And Evil has been immaculately created.
You would think that was enough to make it a perfect movie. I suppose that depends on who is watching it.
It's fun for adults but mostly aimed at tweens because, after all, we are talking about a great fairy tale being brought to life.
Honestly, it reminded me of the Ever After High cartoon where the sons and daughters of the fairy tale heroes and villains all go to boarding school together.
Of course, The School For Good And Evil has a lot more depth to it with a darker edge and a distinct plot which is very scripted.
Overall, the Netflix movie is worth watching because who doesn't love a real life fairytale (sort of) with a happy ending?
