Whether or not you will like The Sleepover depends on how old you are. If you're all grown up you may find some of it insanely ridiculous and irritating. However, if you happen to be much younger then you will love it. Of course, that also means it's a great pick for a family movie.
So what is The Sleepover all about? Clancy and Kevin are two siblings who live a pretty strict life. Despite being 16 years old, Clancy isn't even allowed to have a phone or any social media presence. Their mum has rules and they follow them. Kevin is funny and outgoing and one night has a sleepover with his friend Lewis. At the same time, Clancy is sneaking out of the house to go to a party with her best friend Mim. Then all holy hell breaks out.
Criminals have broken into their house and kidnapped their parents. Turns out that their mum is not who she pretends to be. She is, in fact, a mastermind criminal in witness protection. When her identity is discovered following a viral video, she is forced back into a life of crime. But she has left clues and the four kids must now follow them to rescue their parents.
Basically The Sleepover is a fun, adventure comedy that has its good and bad points. On the plus side, the kids in it are brilliant. Special mention to Maxwell Simkins (Kevin) and Cree Cicchino (Mim) who bring the comedy. There is plenty of action and the movie whizzes by so the pacing is excellent. There are even a few twists and turns thrown in for good measure.
On the downside, the Dad, Ron, is a complete and total hapless idiot. Now I know it's a family-friendly movie but his character is so outrageously stupid that it really let the movie down. Thankfully he is balanced out by Margot, the mum (Malin Akerman from Medical Police), who is a tough cookie, hell-bent on saving them so she can get back to her normal life.
Overall The Sleepover is a kiddies movie and if you keep that in mind it is a fun watch. The kids definitely save this movie!
