Wedding Season follows a tried and tested formula for a romcom. You know the one – two friends pretend to date to get through the holiday/wedding season. That's exactly what this is.
We've seen it before in Holidate and Plus One, so now it's the turn of Asha (Pallavi Sharda) and Ravi (Suraj Sharma) who, pressured by their parents to find spouses, pretend to date in order to survive a summer of weddings.
Asha's life is a little up in the air. She has just broken off an engagement, left a successful banking career behind in the city, is working on a new startup job and has moved to New Jersey for a fresh start.
She's happy but her mother is not. She thinks her oldest daughter will miss a lifetime of happiness if she doesn’t find a husband.
So being a bit of a busy body, Asha’s mother creates an online dating profile to set Asha up with a “perfect” match.
Enter Ravi, or more technically Ravi's parents, who have the exact same idea for their son.
Both Asha and Ravi reluctantly go on the date and discover they are not suitable for each other. But with her mother refusing to give up, Asha proposes a plan to Ravi.
They can pretend to be each other's date to get through the upcoming wedding season.
So for the next three months, through countless invitations and dances, Asha and Ravi get to know each other better, and slowly come to find that they might have more in common than they think.
Wedding Season Official Trailer
Is Wedding Season Worth Watching?
Wedding Season is a typical romantic comedy. It doesn't offer anything very new, in fact, some of the stereotypical characters are a little wince-worthy.
I get that movie makers love to think that all Indian parents typically hang all of their hopes on their kids getting married but could somebody please shake up this cliched trope??? Please????
If you can get passed that, Asha and Ravi are quite likeable and despite their reluctant first date the two do warm to each other.
Is Wedding Season watchable? Yes. Is it the greatest rom-com you've ever seen? No.
It's cute, it's sweet and great if you're looking for a bit of wedding inspiration, but we've seen it all before.
