If you love a solid thriller then look no further than Windfall, a movie that consists entirely of just three cast members.
And they are Lily Collins (Emily in Paris), Jason Segel (Shrinking) and Jesse Plemons (The Power of the Dog).
Collins and Plemons play a wealthy couple who arrive at their vacation home on a last minute getaway only to find it's being robbed by Segal.
Caught unawares, Segel tries to get away but after being spotted by Collins, then decides to capitalise on the situation and get something out of it.
What follows is a negotiation of sorts as Jason Segel, a nobody, takes the couple hostage and tries to bargain his way out of the situation.
Is Windfall Worth Watching?
Windfall is an excellent story about a couple who have everything against a man who has nothing.
Jesse Plemons ups the ante as an arrogant, despicable human being. The silicon valley tech billionaire's life is great but what did he do to get it and what is he willing to sacrifice to keep it?
Windfall is a hark back to the good ole days of the simple thriller. There's no fancy CGI, no distractions – just three great characters, one location and one story.
Windfall Netflix Release Date
In July 2021, Netflix announced that it had acquired the rights of the modern-day noir movie Windfall, from director Charlie McDowell, who also happens to be married to Lily Collins.
Jason Segel and Charlie McDowell (son of Mary Steenburgen and Malcolm McDowell) developed the story, with Justin Lader and Andrew Kevin Walker penning the script.
Reportedly, Netflix acquired the rights in a major 8-figure dollar deal, Windfall was released on Friday, March 18, 2022.
Windfall Cast
One of the smallest casts of any movie I've ever seen, there are really only three players in Netflix's Windfall:
Lily Collins as Laura Oliver
Jesse Plemons as Andy Oliver
Jason Segel as Jasper Queller
All three created the movie and also produced the movie alongside Duncan Montgomery, Jack Selby and Alex Orlovsky.
Lily Collins
Most Netflix fans will instantly recognise Lily Collins from Emily in Paris, the hit show on the streaming platform.
But Collins is more than just a chirpy American finding her way through the French Capital.
Her first big role was as Snow White in Mirror Mirror opposite Julia Roberts in 2012.
Since then she has gone on to star in The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, played Fantine in the tv mini-series production of Les Misérables and took on the role of Ted Bundy's long time girlfriend in Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile.
You can also catch Lily Collins in Inheritance available on Netflix.
She is also married to thriller Windfall director Charlie McDowell since September 2021.
Jesse Plemons
A superb actor who has recently been oscar nominated for his role as George Burbank in Jane Campion's The Power of the Dog, another Netflix movie.
The native Texan has racked up some incredible acting credits over the years initially coming to prominance as Landry Clarke in Friday Night Lights.
Since then his roles include Ed Blumquist in Fargo, the odd next-door neighbour in Game Night and his much-lauded portrayal of Robert Daly in Black Mirror: USS Callister.
In real life, Jesse Plemons is engaged to his Fargo co-star Kirsten Dunst (Bring It On) with the pair dating since 2016.
They have two children and in 2022, became one of two couples to both be nominated for Academy Awards. The other couple are Penélope Cruz (Parallel Mothers) and Javier Bardem (Being the Ricardos).
Jason Segel
The vast majority of people know Jason Segel from his role as Marshall in How I Met Your Mother, a sitcom that ran for nearly ten years.
Prior to that his big movies included Freaks and Geeks (1999), Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008)
He went a little quiet after HIMYM on the acting front, starring in just five movies between 2014 and 2019 before his role as Peter in Dispatches from Elsewhere in 2020.
He is also a producer, on this movie, Netflix's Windfall.
