Moviemakers aren't stupid. They know that most of us will root for the underdog in almost any movie. None more so than when there is a casino or bookie heist in the plot. That's why franchises such as Ocean's Eleven were so hugely successful. Of course having a cast that consisted of George Clooney, Matt Damon, and Brad Pitt also helped.
But there is something strangely satisfying about seeing the good guy win big. So if you're in the mood for some underdog or heist action then look no further than these five great movies on Netflix.
Moneyball is the hugely successful movie based on the Michael Lewis book which was published in 2003. The story follows the Oakland Athletics baseball team and its general manager Billy Beane.
A notoriously bad team, Beane (Brad Pitt) decides to take a different approach to assembling a successful group of players. Like card counters at the blackjack table turning the odds on the casino, Beane and assistant GM Peter Brand (Jonah Hill) focus on analytical and evidence-based stats to create a competitive baseball team despite their tiny budget.
But will this new theory actually work or will Billy Deane gamble himself straight out of a job? Moneyball is a phenomenal true story that will have you rooting for the Oakland baseball team, even if you've never heard of them!
Takers is the 2010 action thriller film directed by John Luessenhop. The movie follows a group of bank robbers who have decided to get out of the game but are then pitched a one-off multi-million dollar bank heist.
They know you have to bet big to win big so with one last job standing between them and fortune they plan the ultimate robbery. That is until they are pitted against Detectives Jack Welles and Eddie Hatcher who will do anything to stop them.
Takers is a top-notch action film with an incredible cast that includes Paul Walker, Idris Elba, Matt Dillon, TI, Jay Hernandez, Michael Ealy and Hayden Christensen. But who are the underdogs – the cops or the robbers?
There are over 300 bank robberies in Boston every year and The Town focuses on a team who set out to get one final score by robbing Fenway Park. It has an amazing cast that includes Ben Affleck, Rebecca Hall, Jon Hamm, Jeremy Renner, Blake Lively and Pete Postlethwaite.
But the story is more than just another heist. It is complicated by the fact that during one bank robbery, a hostage is taken. Unbeknownst to her, her new boyfriend (Affleck) is the bank robber that kidnapped her. So will she be the undoing of the team or will they be able to evade FBI Special Agent Frawley (Hamm) and walk away with the money?
Uncut Gems is an incredible crime thriller that stars Adam Sandler as Howard Ratner, a jeweler and gambling addict in New York City's Diamond District. Desperate to pay off his gambling debts, including $100,000 he owes to a loan shark, and get his life back on track Howard comes up with a plan.
Howard has purchased a rare black opal but when a basketball player wants to hold on to it for good luck, he temporarily swaps it for an NBA Championship ring as collateral. He then pawns the ring using the money to place a bet that should net him $600K if he wins. However, the bet is stopped by the loan shark as it was made with money owed to him. Now Howard has no money, no ring, and still needs to get the opal back.
Uncut Gems is a real departure for Adam Sandler but is a role he excels in. This really is a true underdog story because despite his flaws you can't help but root for Howard in the seedy underbelly world that he lives in.
One of Netflix's most successful movies of 2019, Triple Frontier stars Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac, Charlie Hunnam, Garrett Hedlund, and Pedro Pascal. It follows a group of former Delta Force soldiers who reunite to plan a heist of a South American crime lord named Lorea.
The team knows that Lorea has a secret hideaway buried deep inside the jungles of Columbia. Inside there is millions of dollars so they hatch a plan to rob the house while the family is out. But when they discover far more money than they thought, the plan goes sideways as they simply cannot carry it all.
Their troubles are only beginning as getting out with so much money is a much tougher than getting in, especially when the cartel are hot on their heels. Will they escape with the cash? Will they even survive? Triple Frontier is a great action heist movie that is definitely one to watch.
