It may the fourth instalment in the horror series, but The First Purge is taking it back to where it all began. Starring Marisa Tomei, The First Purge is a prequel depicting the origins of the first annual purge, a 12-hour period in which all crime in America is legal and while it is the first in the franchise not to be directed by James DeMonaco, he did write the screenplay so if you liked the first three, you're probably going to like this as well.
If you've never seen any of the Purge movies then briefly it's a horror, and the premise is that the New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA) test a sociological theory that vents aggression for one night in one isolated community in a bid to get crime stats below 1% for the rest of the year. Unfortunately, the contagion explodes from the trial-city borders and spreads across the nation completely out of control.
A huge film in it's genre, The First Purge hits the big screen on July 4th and is estimated to take in excess of $25m over the five-day opening weekend but if you can't wait until then, check out The Purge (2013) currently available on Netflix.
