In the post Brexit world of the United Kingdom and with Scotland hinting towards a second referendum it seems apt that there be new movies on the horizon about great Scotish leaders. We have the Outlaw King based on Robert the Bruce coming out in November and now we have Mary Queen of Scots.
There have been countless productions of this story but the new release is a big budget epic that looks fantastic. Both lead actors have been Academy Nominees – Margot Robbie stars as Queen Elizabeth 1, she seems to be popping up in lots of films at the moment but that is not a bad thing as she is pulling some amazing performances and looking at the trailer it looks like she will be giving yet another outstanding performance here too. Saoirse Ronan looks brilliantly cast as Mary Stuart – Queen of Scotland and cousin to Elizabeth. Other strong cast members are Guy Pearce, David Tennant, Gemma Chan, Ian Hart and Joe Alwyn.
Filming has taken place across the UK with scenes shot in Glencoe, Edinburgh, Strathdon and Derbyshire, providing some stunning scenery. The screenplay is based on the book My Heart is My Own: The Life of Mary Queen of Scots by Professor John Guy and focuses on the conflict between Mary and Elizabeth. The Release date for Mary Queen of Scots is set for 7th December 2018 in the US and 18th January 2019 in the UK.
