I feel the need… The need for Speed! The wait is over, Maverick is back! Strap yourself in for one hell of a ride! Here is the new Top Gun – Top Gun Maverick!.
You may not want to hear this, but the original Top Gun was released over thirty-three years ago. Yes, that's right, that is how old Tom Cruise is. However, depressing that is, there is no getting away from how popular the original film was. Top Gun has become one of the biggest grossing movies of all time. To date, the film has taken approximately $357,000,000 and in 2015 the Library of Congress chose to preserve the film in the National Registry due to its significance. On top of that, the film spawned a couple of number one hit songs with Take my breath away and You've lost that loving feeling.
As a result of this, Tom Cruise was catapulted to superstardom and annoyingly has been riding on this all this time. In fact, anyone involved with the film has become cinematic icons. Not too bad for a film that was pretty much panned by the critics before the public got to see it.
It is fair to say, fans have been desperate for a Top Gun 2 with speculation keeping everyone hungry for more. Paramount approached Jerry Bruckheimer and Tony Scott way back in 2010 to make a new film. However, there have been a few bumps in the road along the way. Including the sad passing of Tony Scott (Director of the original Top Gun Movie).
As you would expect, Top Gun Maverick brings Tom Cruise back as Maverick. But the Maverick's nemesis “Iceman” is back too. However, the Iceman (played by Val kilmer) is a Vice Admiral now. So things could be quite abrasive between these two old champions. However, on top of these two movie greats reprising their roles, you get Ed Harris, Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly and a whole host of talent to complete the casting list.
The premise from what I can see is Maverick has to face that he is top of the tree, of a dying breed. The harsh reality is that drones are taking over. Where highly skilled pilots were once needed, now unmanned drones carry out the same job. However, there are some things a drone can not do and rebellious Maverick is the man to deliver. As the Top Gun instructor, he finds himself training the son of his long lost friend “Goose”. Goose died in a tragic accident. So this link to the first film is a nice touch.
There is no doubt, what we are looking at with Top Gun Maverick is another huge smash hit. The trailer looks insane and certainly looks to actually be an improvement on the first; Brave statement – I know. However, when you see that the amazing Hans Zimmer and Harold Faltermeyer are jointly composing the soundscore. Also, Academy award-winning Cinematographer Claudio Miranda is involved. Things get very interesting indeed.
It may be some time before the release date, but I know I will be on the Highway to the Danger zone when it does hit the cinemas.
